Kitchen Safety Tips for Seniors
It doesn’t matter how old we are, but as adults we want to keep our independence, even if we are well in our senior years. Aside from being able to use the bathroom on our own, do little household chores, and other usual acts of daily living, we don’t want to be kept away from the kitchen especially if preparing meals is something we enjoy.
The best thing to do is not to restrict our senior family members from the kitchen but make sure it is a safe place for them to be.
- Use a single-lever faucet that can balance water temperature.
- Put in a storage wall rather than upper cabinets.
- Provide an area away from the knife drawer and the stove.
- Modify your stove to provide a gas odor that is strong enough to alert you.
- Adapt one counter for wheelchair access if necessary.
