Gardening Modifications for the Elderly and Handicapped

Garden paths should be wide enough to allow passage of wheel chairs.Gardening is a wonderful hobby to take up as it is a relaxing and very rewarding activity. It’s perfect for anybody regardless of age or physical ability. However, there are several things you can do to accommodate a person’s needs, may he be a senior or a differently-abled individual, to make it safer and more manageable for him.

  • Raised gardening beds make it easier for people who have trouble kneeling or bending to reach low-growing plants. It’s also ideal to make the beds a maximum of four feet wide so that it won’t be difficult to reach the center of the beds.
  • Garden paths should be wide enough to allow passage of wheel chairs and smooth but also able to provide good traction.
  • Window boxes, hanging baskets and potted plants make gardening more accessible and convenient.
  • Having the right tools makes tasks easier, so make the gardening tools more accessible by keeping them in a location handy to the gardener.
